Sociedad Operadora de Proyectos

In March 2018, five entrepreneurs with previous experience of business and project management in the Oil & Gas, Mining, Energy, Infrastructure, and Agriculture sectors, founded the Sociedad Operadora de Proyectos (“SOP”), a company dedicated to the business of agriculture in Colombia.

SOP´s pilot project (Berlin) is a 9.5 Ha blueberry plantation started in June 2018. It's located in the municipality of Zipaquirá, approximately 43 km from Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. The pilot plantation is already in production, showing fruits of excellent quality in terms of size, flavor, and sweetness.

One of the main goals of the SOP's Strategic Plan is to develop 200+ Ha  blueberry plantations by the year 2025, 100% for the export market. The second plantation, “50X”, is a 54 Ha project to be developed in the municipality of Paipa.

Colombia´s blueberries for the world

Colombia is a tropical country, able of producing blueberries throughout the year. This capability, along with expert pruning techniques, will allow Colombia to produce blueberries during the northern and southern hemisphere non productive months (when they cannot produce blueberries).

There are already around 450 Ha of blueberries in Colombia and it is projected to grow by another 1,500 Ha in the next 2-3 years. Currently, the fruit is mainly for the local market; but the Colombian fruit is recognized as a very high-quality export product. International companies are landed in Colombia to promote, support and comercialice this novel product around the world.

The global blueberry market is forecast to reach $ 4.5 billion by 2024, growing at a compound annual rate of 6.7% during the forecast period (2019 - 2024).

This indicates that consumer demand for blueberries has skyrocketed. According to USDA research, the per capita consumption in the United States has grown more than 600% in the past 20 years. And thats nothing compared to the recently opened markets of Asia and the Middle East!

Blueberries and other types of berries are now highly desired for proanthocyanidins, substances with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

This "superfood" has high concentrations of Vitamin C, K, A, B complex, manganese, and fiber, which are very beneficial for our body.

Consumed in sufficient quantities, blueberries reduce the risk of a variety of chronic diseases by counteracting the effect of free radicals. Some studies have concluded that the consumption of this fruit can help combat the threat of cancer cell proliferation during the promotion stage.
